Plans announced for redevelopment of Brockville’s former Woolworths building

The City of Brockville is abuzz with excitement as Mayor Matt Wren and Josh Gibson, Managing Partner of the Caber Group of Companies, unveiled plans for a groundbreaking investment set to reshape downtown Brockville.

The proposed project, slated to be one of the most extensive construction endeavors on the city’s main street, promises a revitalization that could redefine the trajectory of the entire downtown dore.

Mayor Wren, speaking at the announcement, emphasized the significance of this development. “Our news today about the redevelopment of the property formerly known as Woolworths will complement other recent investments like the adjacent 48 King West luxury suites and move the needle forward tremendously.”

He commended the unanimous decision by the previous Council to embark on this transformative journey, highlighting the unity and support behind the initiative. “It was a decision we reached together, and I believe that is significant,” added Mayor Wren.

Addressing the project’s specifics, it was revealed that the redevelopment aligns with the zoning requirements for Downtown Brockville. The street front is set to host commercial spaces, while incorporating housing—a move aligned with the city’s strategic objective of boosting residential presence in the downtown area.

Preserving the historical ambiance remains a priority in the design process, respecting the town’s heritage despite replacing a contemporary façade. Additionally, the community’s focus on off-street parking and professional spaces has been taken into account.

The Caber Group is now in the stages of submitting its planning application, marking the commencement of a public engagement phase. This will include a statutory public meeting in the early months of the New Year, potentially as early as February. Residents will have the opportunity to share comments and raise questions as the project progresses.

Josh Gibson of the Caber Group expressed enthusiasm for the submitted site plan application, acknowledging its significance for the city and its residents.

“This is a significant milestone, and one that the city and its residents have been anticipating for quite some time,” Gibson shared. “We look forward to the public consultation process and remain committed to delivering this exciting project that will bring much-needed housing to downtown and restore the heritage feel of the streetscape.”

“Redevelopment in our historical downtown core is essential for preserving cultural heritage, stimulating economic growth, fostering community identity, and creating a sustainable and vibrant environment,” states a media release from the city. “It requires a careful balance between modernization and preservation to ensure the longevity and relevance of the downtown area.”

During the afternoon announcement, Mayor Wren expressed gratitude to those involved in bringing the project to this stage. “Thank you to those who’ve gotten us here today. For your courage, your imagination, and your vision.”
