At a recent meeting, Gananoque council voted against a funding commitment to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF).

The motion, which was moved by Coun. Anne-Marie Koiner and seconded by Deputy Mayor Vicki Leakey, was voted against 5-2.

In November, University Hospitals Kingston Foundation made a request to Gananoque council for funding.

In a delegation, Abigail McIlquham, associate director of healthcare advancement and CEO Tom Zsolnay, asked the Town of Gananoque to make a funding pledge of $75,000 in each year for five years (2024-2028) for a total commitment of $375,000.

However, Mayor John Beddows and other members of council were concerned over the amount UHKF wanted pledged each year.

It was noted to council that if council had agreed to the pledge, it would have been funded from an additional levy above operations and policy.
