The day of the long awaited total solar eclipse of 2024 is finally here.

As Brockville residents and tourists alike gather around Blockhouse Island this afternoon to partake in the festivities, they may be disappointed to learn that the Brockville Railway Tunnel attraction will remain closed due to technical difficulties.

The Brockville, Ontario Facebook page published a update about the Brockville Railway Tunnel on Saturday, April 6, 2024, where they elaborated on the current progress of maintenance on the popular attraction.

“Numerous components of the tunnel light show have prematurely failed,” the post states. “The issues go beyond regular maintenance. Numerous components of the tunnel light show have prematurely failed resulting in additional work to open for the 2024 season.”

The City assured the public that they are “actively engaged” in working with lighting system professionals and manufacturers to fix the various issues as Brockville’s peak tourism season draws nearer. However, “while every effort has been made to open the tunnel in time for Monday’s solar eclipse, the City regrets that this will not be possible.”

The City of Brockville did not provide an exact date for reopening, but confirmed that the tunnel will once again be open to the public in the following weeks. B
