‘Don’t feed the pigeons,’ City of Brockville urges

The City of Brockville is asking residents to stop leaving food for pigeons near the doors of the Woolworths building.

A media release explains that “the City appreciates the concerns that citizens have expressed over the pigeons that were trapped in the Woolworths building.”

Staff have received multiple calls on the matter, and explored ways they could possibly get the pigeons out of the building. “However, once inside it became evident that this required specialist equipment and personal protective equipment,” the release says.

Last week, a wildlife control company came to assess the situation, and began catching and releasing as many of the pigeons as they could. They have left traps in the building and will return daily until they have caught and released all of the birds.

The City says that presently, there are numerous birds congregating around the front doors.

“The pigeons have seen this building as their roost and are returning to the building but are unable to get into it.  Eventually they will find another place to roost.”

In an effort to help, concerned members of the public have been leaving food for those pigeons near the doors.

“While this may seem helpful, it is only encouraging them to remain here as they have a readily available source of food.”

The City says it will continue to monitor the building and release pigeons that find their way in.
