Here’s a roundup of what happened at the Tuesday, Oct. 1 meeting of Gananoque council.

Gananoque council commits to new start time for meetings

The time change to council meetings in Gananoque will continue.

Council recently passed a bylaw to amend the town’s procedural bylaw, which changes the start time of council meetings from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Council tried the new start time out during the summer and took a liking to the adjustment, which was made to help increase participation and accommodate the schedules of councillors and residents.

Bore hole drilling occurring in Gananoque

Bore hole drilling is currently ongoing in Gananoque.

The town announced that its contractor will be completing geotechnical investigation drilling for the ongoing shoreline erosion mitigation project.

This is occurring around Joel Stone Heritage Park.

“They will be drilling 12 boreholes,” reads a statement from the town. “Expect short-term sidewalk closures in the vicinity.”

The bole hole drilling is expected to be completed by some point Thursday.

New appointments for Deputy Mayor Leakey

Deputy Mayor Vicki Leakey has been appointed to the Artefact Oversight Committee, replacing Coun. Matt Harper.

Leakey has also been appointed to the Downtown Gananoque Business Improvement Area (BIA) Board of Directors, replacing Coun. David Osmond.

Islanders home opener

The Gananoque Islanders, the defending champions of the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League, are hosting their home opener of the 2024-25 season on Saturday, as they battle the MV Wolves at Lou Jeffries Gananoque and TLTI Recreation Centre.

A public skate will be held before the game, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Afterwards, the championship banner celebration will occur, roughly around 7:30 p.m. Then it’s puck drop.

Fire safety initiative

The Gananoque Fire Service will be conducting smoke alarm audits as part of its Check Your Smoke Alarm Day and Fire Prevention Week initiatives.

“Our team will be visiting homes on Elm Street, Birch Street, Maple Street North, Second Street, First Street, Oak Street and River Street to ensure that every residence has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,” a statement from the fire service reads. “We kindly request your co-operation during these audits.”

The next fire safety initiative will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 9.

While having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is the law in Ontario, this program, the Gananoque Fire Service notes, is not punitive in nature.

“Our goal is to keep our community safe by ensuring every home has functional smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,” the fire service’s statement concludes.

Free family event

Mark your calendars and head down to the Lou Jeffries Gananoque and TLTI Recreation Centre and Gord Brown Memorial Outdoor Rink for a whole weekend of family fun.

On Friday, a roller skating event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by an outdoor movie night, featuring Hotel Transylvania on Saturday at 7 p.m., and activities and games on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grass area behind the rink.
