Appointment of deputy mayor deferred in Leeds and Thousand Islands

An expected appointment of a deputy mayor has been deferred until next week’s Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands council meeting.

The unanimous decision was made during Monday’s committee of the whole meeting in the Lansdowne council chambers.

The reason for the deferral is due to council’s dispute over whether the deputy role is for a one-year or two-year term.

Municipal clerk Michelle Hannah said the procedural bylaw labels the role as a one-year term.

That, however, was disputed by Couns. Terry Fodey and Jeff Lackie.

“This has always been a two-year term,” said Fodey, the current deputy mayor.

“I’m certain it was changed to two years,” added Lackie, representing Ward 1.

Before the deferral, Coun. Brian Mabee nominated Fodey to continue in his role.

Lackie then nominated Mabee.

Fodey took over the role as deputy mayor in July of 2023, after the sudden passing of Gordon Ohlke.

Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
