‘An age-old tradition’: New Year’s Levee to be held in Brockville Jan. 1

The City of Brockville is invited to come together to celebrate the onset of a new year at the traditional New Year’s Levee on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
A New Year’s Levee is a longstanding Canadian tradition that involves a reception with various community groups to mark the beginning of the new year, often hosted by military institutions or local government officials.
When asked how long the Levee has been happening in Brockville, Executive Assistant Stephanie Dunbar exclaimed, “Oh wow! I wouldn’t know for sure but it’s an age-old tradition in Brockville. It’s been around a lot longer than any of the staff who currently work for the City.”
Dunbar continued, “I think maintaining this tradition is important because it gives City officials a chance to connect with the community, and we also offer a presentation of sorts, like a year in review. It’s great to have the community come together and spend time with the mayor and other councillors.”
From noon to 2 p.m., everyone is welcome to partake in the festivities alongside Mayor Matt Wren and members of Brockville City Council at the Brockville Memorial Centre at 100 Magedoma Blvd. Refreshments will be available on-site and there will be a free public skate from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
