The Town of Gananoque is mourning the loss of Sue Smith, a retired manager of recreation whose dedication and vision enriched the community.

Smith died on Jan. 3, at the age of 70.

In her honour, flags at Town Hall and the Lou Jeffries, Gananoque and TLTI Recreation Centre were flown at half-mast on Jan. 9 and 10.

Smith, a long-serving town employee, was celebrated for her tireless work in supporting local organizations and fostering community growth.

“She helped many volunteer organizations to improve the Town of Gananoque,” said John and Marion MacLeod, praising Smith’s leadership with the Trails Committee and the Lions Club.

The Rotary Club of Gananoque echoed these sentiments, calling Smith’s contributions a “lasting legacy.”

“Her energy, creativity, and commitment to our town reflect her caring spirit,” reads their statement. “We truly appreciate everything Sue worked so hard to achieve.

Smith’s passion for arts and culture was also highlighted by the Union of Professional Musicians, Local 518, who collaborated with her to bring live music to Gananoque’s parks.

“She was a wonderful person to work with and understood the importance of supporting live music and local artists,” the union said in a statement. “She will be missed.”

Born Susan Helen Innes, Smith lived in Lyndhurst, Gananoque, and Sault Ste. Marie, leaving a legacy of care and community-building.

She is survived by her husband, Terry; children Glendon, Miranda, and Joshua; and many family members and friends. A celebration of her life is planned for warmer weather, and the family encourages donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory.

Messages of condolence can be shared at Barclay Funeral Home’s website.

“Sue was a long-serving employee with the Town of Gananoque and will be deeply missed,” the town said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends. Rest in peace, Sue.”
