On a brisk Thursday night in Gananoque, the chill in the air was no match for the warmth on the ice as family and friends of the late Gord Brown faced off against the Gananoque Royals at the Gord Brown Memorial Outdoor Rink.

The outdoor rink, named in honour of the lifelong Gananoque resident, passionate hockey player, and former Member of Parliament for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, set the perfect stage for an unforgettable night of hockey, community, and remembrance.

Brown died on May 2, 2018, aged 57, after suffering a heart attack at his office on Parliament Hill.

Despite the frosty temperatures, the evening was filled with camaraderie and competitive spirit.

The Gananoque Royals embraced the moment, expressing their gratitude for being part of such a meaningful event.

“Thanks Town of Gananoque for hosting this special event,” a statement from the team reads. “The Royals had a great time playing against friends and family of the late Gord Brown. Very special event for all involved.”

The Town of Gananoque, staffers say, hopes to make this heartfelt game an annual tradition, ensuring that Gord Brown’s legacy lives on not just through politics or local history, but through the sport he loved so much.

As skates carved the ice and laughter echoed under the night sky, it was clear that this was more than just a game—it was a tribute, a celebration, and a promise to remember one of Gananoque’s own.
