A late-night ride-share trip turned violent in Brockville when a passenger allegedly attacked the driver, assaulted a police officer, and caused damage while in custody, according to authorities.
Police say that at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, police received a 911 call to attend the area of Stewart Boulevard regarding a report of two people involved in a fight. Officers arrived and ensured the involved parties were separated.
After separating the two parties, police began an investigation, which they say revealed that multiple people were travelling from the Montreal to Toronto, as part of a ride share.
“During the travels, a 28-year-old, male passenger, became belligerent towards the driver,” police state. The vehicle stopped in Brockville to remove the subject, which resulted in the altercation becoming physical. Police were told the subject assaulted the driver by striking him and attended a nearby gas station with the driver’s bag. The driver received minor injuries.
Police say the subject made discriminatory comments towards one of the officers, and then “slapped the officer in the face with his passport.” He was placed under arrest, and was resistant, police say. Once searched, it was found that the suspect was in possession of a quantity of fentanyl and also on probation with conditions.
He was taken to the Brockville Police Service to remain in custody. While there, he purposely urinated through the cell block area, according to police.
The driver who was assaulted did not wish to pursue charges, however, the subject was held for bail for the offences of assault peace officer, mischief under $5,000, possession of fentanyl and fail to comply with probation.
