‘If she touched a life, she made it better’: Prescott councillor Ruth Lockett passes away after tragic fall

The Town of Prescott is in mourning following the passing of Councillor Ruth Lockett on Monday, March 31 after a serious fall down a flight of stairs at the Alaine Chartrand Community Centre in Prescott on Saturday, March 22.
Following the fall, her son Shawn Lockett detailed the situation on Facebook, writing “We are extremely grateful for the immediate response of those around us. For those that made sure 911 was called, those that stayed with her while waiting for the paramedics to arrive, the members of the Prescott fire department that were there as friends and professionals, the paramedics provided excellent care and that made sure she was tended to and transported to Ottawa…”
After an immediate life-saving surgery at Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus, Lockett was later induced into a coma. Shawn explained in his post, “She had an immediate life-saving surgery to address the brain bleed and it will be day to day as they assess her recovery and monitor for any other injuries.”
In a very tragic update, Shawn confirmed his mother’s passing on the morning of March 31. He confirmed his mother was surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of her passing.
“There are no words to describe our loss. Mom was the greatest person we ever knew,” Shawn said. “If she touched a life, she made it better. Her care had no boundaries and she leaves behind family, friends, and communities that she cared deeply about. Our thanks to the Ottawa Civic staff for their care and compassion and to those that offered their support throughout.”
Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar released a statement on behalf of the Town Council, staff, and community within Prescott.
“She will be greatly missed by her colleagues around the council table and the countless individuals that had the pleasure to get to know Ruth both personally and professionally. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ruth’s family and friends as they grieve the loss of a truly remarkable individual. There are no words that can express what Ruth Lockett meant to so many in our community.”
Brockville Mayor Matt Wren also shared his condolences online, writing “Councillor Ruth Lockett lived out her dedication to her community every day and served because she loved her community so deeply. For that, she will be long and respectfully remembered. May she rest in peace and may her family be supported and comforted at this time.”
