Brockville to mark Pride Week with official proclamation and flag raising

Brockville City Council has officially proclaimed the week of Monday, June 2 to Monday, June 9 as Brockville Pride Week in support of the local LGBTQ+ (2SLGBTTQQIAAP+) community. This annual proclamation reaffirms the city of Brockville’s support for equal rights and celebrates the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the city.
At their meeting on Tuesday, May 13, Brockville City Council unanimously voted in favour of the proclamation. As a show of allyship, the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag will be raised at Tunnel Bay during the week-long celebration, symbolizing the city’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, and solidarity.

According to Brockville Pride, the initiative began in 2010 as a direct response to the suicide of a local 2SLGBTQIA+ Brockville resident — a tragedy that catalyzed awareness about the urgent need for support and acceptance in the local community.
“This painful loss echoed a larger issue within the community, which was the continued acceptance of homophobia and lack of support for those in the 2SLGHTQIA+ community,” the organization explains in their strategic plan.
What started as a walk to bring individuals together, has since grown into a critical resource for LGBTQIA+ youth in Brockville and serves as a necessary advocate for equal rights, representation, and acceptance.
Pride week this year will include a variety of events and community gatherings organized by Brockville Pride. Keep up with the events as they’re announced by following their various social media platforms.
