New bandshell project in Lyn to honour legacy of Sherril Mitchell

The Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley is moving ahead with a new community bandshell at Douglas A. Scott Jr. Memorial Park in Lyn, inspired by the life and contributions of the late Sherril Mitchell.
The project began with a proposal from Mitchell’s husband, Dave Mitchell, who wanted to honour her memory through a meaningful community initiative. After a conversation with Councillor Rob Smith, the idea gained support from Council and the community, leading to the creation of the Sherril Mitchell Memorial Bandshell.
Sherril Mitchell was a long-time educator at Lyn Public School and an active volunteer in the community. She was involved in school plays, musical events, and charity efforts, and was known for supporting students in need. She also contributed to events such as the Terry Fox Run and Lyn community breakfasts, and helped organize initiatives with the Brockville Lions Club and the Lions Club Steel Band.
An initial private donation of $40,000 from Dave Mitchell is helping to fund the project. The bandshell will be constructed using accessible, low-maintenance materials and include electrical service for lighting and sound. Once complete, it will be available for community concerts, speaking events, movie nights, weddings, fundraisers, and more.
An ad hoc committee has been formed to guide the project, with members including Adrain Geraghty, Sylvia Foxton, Dave Mitchell, Jim McMullen, Ray Morrison, and Councillor Rob Smith. A community fundraising campaign will launch in June, with the goal of completing the bandshell this fall.
Donations are now being accepted through the Township’s website: ektwp.ca/donateSMMB
