Gananoque council approves plans for private school

A private school in Gananoque has cleared a major hurdle, as council approved a revised development permit on Tuesday, paving the way for expanded child care and early education services at 250 Wilson Drive.
The decision allows for the construction of a 1,723-square-foot accessory building on the property to accommodate a private school for up to 30 children, subject to several conditions, including compliance with the Ontario Building Code and Ministry of Education requirements.
“This development provides a much-needed service in our community,” said Deputy Mayor Vicki Leakey during the meeting. “I can’t say thank you enough. The children are the future.”
The property had previously been approved in 2024 to operate as a day nursery under home occupation provisions, with before- and after-school care offered in a proposed accessory structure on the north side of the lot.
Tuesday’s approval modifies that plan, moving the new building to the south side to make room for a fenced play area and parking lot, while increasing the maximum number of children permitted from the original application.
Council’s approval was conditional on a final, scaled site plan that reflects several design changes: an increased front yard setback, relocated garbage enclosure to the side or rear of the property, depressed curbing near the accessible parking space, and exterior vinyl siding that complements the existing dwelling. The owner must also enter into a development permit agreement within one year of the decision for the approval to remain valid.
All costs associated with meeting these conditions are to be covered by the owner.
Council members voiced strong support for the project, emphasizing its role in supporting working families and enhancing educational options in Gananoque.
