Graffiti removal costs mounting in Smiths Falls as town, police take action

The Town of Smiths Falls is encouraging residents to report vandalism following a recent rise in graffiti across public and private property.

In recent weeks, graffiti has been reported in multiple locations, including bridges, street signs, a pedestrian tunnel under the railway, parks, community buildings, and privately owned structures.

“Removing graffiti isn’t just about aesthetics—it costs money, time, and resources that could be better used elsewhere,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. “We take pride in our community, and we’re asking residents to help protect it.”

Town officials say thousands of dollars are spent each year on graffiti removal and property restoration—funds that could otherwise support community programs or infrastructure projects.

To help address the problem, the town is working with the Smiths Falls Police Service to monitor high-traffic areas and respond to reports. Police Chief Jodi Empey confirmed that three minors have recently been identified in connection with graffiti at businesses in the south end of town. She said the youth will be dealt with through alternative measures under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“We are aware of the uptick of graffiti and are working with the town on all the areas affected,” said Chief Empey. “We encourage anyone who sees someone deface property to call us immediately.”

Residents are encouraged to report graffiti or suspicious activity to local police at 613-283-0357. Graffiti on municipal property can be reported to the Town via email at info@smithsfalls.ca.
