Westport, Smiths Falls artists capture top prizes in en plein air art contest

Submitted by Town of Smiths Falls

The Smiths Falls Heritage House Museum has named Westport’s Lorraine Gravelle the 2025 Rideau Artist of the Year, following a juried en plein air competition that challenged more than 20 regional artists to create original works inspired by the Rideau Canal and surrounding landscape.

Artists were given 12 hours to complete their pieces on-site, with works later judged by a panel of three arts professionals who evaluated them on impact, composition, style and technique, alignment with the theme, and overall completion.

Gravelle received the $1,000 grand prize for her acrylic painting, Joy on the Rideau. In her artist statement, she wrote: “This painting reflects the child-like joy I have found again once I decided to give myself a fresh start. Through vibrant colours, bold lines, and a childish desire to paint what makes me happy, I recreate the local landscapes that spark joy in me.”

The youth prize of $250 was awarded to 15-year-old Smiths Falls artist Anita Garvin for her mixed media piece Foster’s Hidden Gems, which featured a whimsical interpretation of a decommissioned lock in Smiths Falls. “I love weird, funky art that makes people think,” Garvin said.

All entries from the competition are now on display at the Smiths Falls Heritage House Museum, located at 11 Old Slys Road. The public can visit the gallery Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until July 12 to view the exhibit and vote for the People’s Choice Award. The artist receiving the most votes will win automatic entry into next year’s competition.

The museum is also accepting applications for its 44th Annual Art Show, which runs from November 9 to December 20, 2025.
