Sewer main cleaning underway in Brockville through August, residents may experience ‘blowback’

The City of Brockville’s Wastewater Systems Division has begun its seasonal sewer main cleaning program, with work expected to continue through August 2026.
The preventative maintenance work will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
According to the city, sewer main cleaning helps remove debris such as grease, sand and wipes, prevents blockages and improves the overall efficiency of the municipal wastewater collection system.
Residents in areas where cleaning is underway may experience what the city describes as “blowback,” which can cause splashing or bubbling at floor drains, toilets or cleanouts as high-velocity wash water and air move through the system.
The city recommends residents close or cover drains if they see cleaning crews working in their area. If odours are noticed afterward, residents are advised to run taps for 30 seconds or pour water down drains to refill the trap.
Cleaning will occur in select areas across the city. For 2026, crews will be working in:
- Zone 1-A: West of Beecher Street
- Zone 1-B – West of Windsor Drive
The city said the work is an essential part of its wastewater system maintenance program.
