Brockville Transit has temporarily suspended its River Route service between Brockville and Cardinal after separate traffic incidents on Highway 2 and Highway 401 made it unsafe to continue operating the route for the time being.

The River Route provides transit service connecting Brockville and Cardinal and is used by commuters, residents and visitors travelling between the two communities along the St. Lawrence corridor.

The city announced on the morning of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, that the suspension took effect immediately following a tractor-trailer collision that closed Highway 2, the primary roadway used by the transit service.

Transit operators initially attempted to reroute buses using Highway 401, however, a second traffic incident on the highway further complicated travel conditions and ultimately led to the decision to pause service.

City officials said the combination of road closures and safety concerns made it impractical to maintain reliable operations along the route, adding that passenger and operator safety remains the top priority as crews and emergency responders continue dealing with the impacts of the traffic incidents.

The city is asking riders for patience and understanding while the situation unfolds. Brockville Transit said updates will be provided as soon as conditions improve and service can safely resume.

Update: Tuesday, June 2, 2026 (3:55pm)

Although Highway 2 remains closed, city officials have announced that Highway 401 has reopened.

As a result, the River Route has been brought back in service for the afternoon route, starting with a stop at the Brockville Superstore at 3:30 p.m.
