Young people interested in making a difference in their communities are being invited to learn more about what it takes to run for municipal office during a free information session tonight.

The workshop, hosted by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), is being billed as a great learning opportunity for youth considering a run for council in Ontario’s upcoming municipal elections this fall.

The virtual workshop will be facilitated by three current municipal leaders, Natasha Salonen, Mayor of the Township of Wilmot, Cameron Wales, Councillor for the City of Brockville and Aidan Kallioinen, Councillor for the Town of Espanola.

The AMO say the workshop will provide practical advice and firsthand insights from current municipal leaders who entered politics at a young age. The session is designed to help young people better understand the expectations and realities of the election process as a young candidate, including campaign planning strategies, communication and community engagement techniques, and the steps required to become an official candidate.

According to the AMO, the workshop will also explore what elected office may look like once the campaign is over to provide attendees with a better understanding of the responsibilities and opportunities that come with serving on council.

The free information session will take place tonight, Tuesday, June 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pre-registration is required.
