OPP provide details on crashes that temporarily suspended Brockville Transit’s River Route June 2

The Ontario Provincial Police have provided more information on two separate transport truck collisions that were behind road closures that temporarily suspended Brockville Transit’s River Route service on Tuesday.
The River Route, which connects Brockville and Cardinal, was temporarily suspended on Tuesday, June 2 after closures on both Highway 2 and Highway 401 made it unsafe to continue operating the route.
In response to inquiries from Brockvilleist, OPP Sergeant Erin Cranton confirmed both incidents involved single-vehicle collisions with transport trucks in the Grenville area.
The first collision happened just before 3 a.m. on June 2.
According to Cranton, a transport truck driver lost control, causing the vehicle to strike the centre median and roll over.
The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed at the exit to Johnstown in Cardinal. No injuries were reported.
A second collision happened shortly after 6 a.m. the same day.
Cranton said a transport truck struck a guardrail and rolled onto its side. County Road 2 was closed between Johnstown and Cardinal as a result.
No injuries were reported in that collision.
The City of Brockville announced Tuesday morning that the River Route was suspended immediately following the County Road 2 collision, which affected the primary roadway used by the transit service.
Transit operators initially attempted to reroute buses using Highway 401, but the earlier collision on the highway complicated travel conditions.
City officials said the combination of road closures and safety concerns made it impractical to maintain reliable service.
Highway 401 reopened later in the day, allowing Brockville Transit to resume the River Route for its afternoon schedule beginning with the 3:30 p.m. stop at the Brockville Superstore.
County Road 2 remained closed at the time of the city’s final update Tuesday afternoon.
