Students at South Grenville District High School (SGDHS) marked a decade of Relay for Life events by raising more than $92,000 for cancer research.

The school hosted its tenth Relay for Life event on Wednesday, May 28, bringing students, staff and community members together in support of the Canadian Cancer Society, according to a media release from the Upper Canada District School Board.

During the 12-hour event, teams walked, ran and rolled around the school track while participating in activities, games and entertainment. Since hosting its first Relay for Life fundraiser in 2014, SGDHS has raised nearly $600,000.

“This year we are celebrating a decade of running Relay for Life at South Grenville,” said Relay Committee Lead Teacher Jackie Henry in the release. “We’re super proud of these kids. It’s a great community, with so many people involved and everybody really pitching in.”

The 2026 event included 44 teams and 430 participants, with live entertainment, games and food vendors throughout the day.

Student Audrey Henry, who has led the Relay Committee for the past three years, said the support from the school community has been inspiring.

“It’s crazy how many people are involved with it being such a small school. It’s inspiring that we have something that brings us all together, and that we’re raising so much money. It’s so impressive and everyone has been working really hard. I feel like I get teary eyed talking about it!”

The evening included a Survivors Lap, where 25 cancer survivors and their families led participants around the track, followed by a Luminary Lap featuring personalized luminary bags placed around the track in honour of those affected by cancer.

Ten teams from Seaway District High School also joined the event at SGDHS for the third year in a row, along with participants from Augusta Township and local businesses, including Giant Tiger and Seaway Physiotherapy.

Other Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) schools also hosted Relay for Life events this year, including Athens District High School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, and Russell High School.
