A man was found dead after a vehicle fire at the Kemptville Highway 416 and Rideau River Road carpool lot early on the morning of Monday, June 29. The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) now says this incident is connected to a murder-suicide investigation involving the deaths of two children.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the vehicle fire shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Monday. The lot remains closed as of the afternoon, however the on-ramp from Rideau River Road remains open, according to OPP.

Ottawa police have since confirmed the deceased man was the father of two boys, aged seven and 12, who were later found dead at a residence on Mandevilla Crescent in south Ottawa. Officers were called to the home at approximately 10 a.m. for a wellness check, where the two children were discovered deceased.

The investigation is being led by the OPS Homicide Unit, with assistance from the OPP.

Police are also investigating a business fire in Iroquois that occurred earlier Monday morning. According to the release, both that scene and the Kemptville vehicle fire are believed to be connected to the Ottawa investigation.

The names of the deceased have not been released as next of kin notifications continue.

“Investigators continue to assess the connections between these incidents and do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public,” OPS say in the media release.
