Police warn of more distraction-style jewellery thefts in Brockville

Brockville police are again warning residents to be on guard after another distraction-style jewellery theft similar to one reported last month.

Police initially issued a warning on June 10 after suspects approached a woman in a residential neighbourhood and attempted to sell her a necklace. While placing the necklace around her neck, the suspects distracted her and secretly replaced her genuine gold necklace with a fake one.

Police say a similar incident was reported on July 4 at about 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Real Canadian Superstore on Parkedale Avenue.

Police say a dark-coloured SUV carrying four occupants approached the victim and attempted to sell jewellery. The suspects convinced the victim to try on a necklace and, while placing it around the victim’s neck, allegedly removed the necklace the victim was already wearing. The victim did not realize the swap had occurred until after the suspects had left.

Police have also received reports of people being approached by individuals attempting to sell jewellery in public. In some cases, buyers later discovered the jewellery they purchased was counterfeit.

“The Brockville Police Service reminds the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves and their property,” the release reads. “Be cautious when approached by individuals selling jewelry or other items in public places. If you experience a similar incident or feel unsafe in any circumstance described above, contact police immediately.”
