Brockville entrepreneur Wajahat “Waji” Khaleeque named 2026 Business Person of the Year

A Brockville-based entrepreneur whose businesses have become local favourites will be honoured with one of the city’s highest business accolades this fall.
The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce announced Wajahat “Waji” Khaleeque as the recipient of the 2026 Business Person of the Year Award in a media release issued Friday, July 17. The award celebrates Khaleeque’s entrepreneurial success, community leadership and ongoing investment within the community of Brockville.
According to the Chamber, Khaleeque has established himself as one of Brockville’s growing business leaders over the past six years. He first opened Sunset Grill, which has become a popular dining destination in the city, before expanding his business portfolio with Mary Brown’s Chicken, another venture that has quickly taken off.
It appears his confidence in Brockville consumers continues to grow, as he recently announced plans to start up a third local business.
In their announcement, the Chamber said Khaleeque’s success has been driven not only by strong business acumen but by a leadership style centred on integrity, professionalism and putting people first.
“He is known for treating his employees like family, supporting their growth, and creating a positive workplace built on teamwork, accountability, and exceptional customer service,” the Chamber detailed.
Outside of business, Khaleeque has become equally well known for giving back to the Brockville community.
Over the years, he has supported a wide range of charitable organizations and fundraising initiatives, including the Brockville and Area Food Bank, Loaves and Fishes, the Salvation Army, the Canadian Cancer Society, BHRR Animal Rescue, Vanier Public School, the Brockville Sports Hall of Fame and the Brockville Braves.
The Chamber added that Khaleeque’s community involvement extends beyond financial contributions, noting that the businessman serves on the Board of Directors of the Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce. He is also an active member of the Chamber’s Programming Committee and volunteers with the Brockville Buzz Squad.
Khaleeque will be honoured during the Chamber’s 67th Awards of Excellence Gala at the Brockville Country Club on September 17, 2026, where the organization will also present awards for Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Community Excellence, Tourism and the Ben TeKamp Award.
