A towing company and a Maitland man are facing theft and fraud charges following an OPP investigation into the handling of cargo and towing services after a commercial vehicle collision near Brockville.

Police say on Tuesday, July 21 that the investigation began after a commercial delivery truck carrying food was involved in a collision on the eastbound Highway 401 off ramp at North Augusta Road on March 18.

A towing company responded to the scene and removed the truck’s cargo before towing the vehicle from the highway.

Leeds OPP launched an investigation after receiving allegations that the cargo was not returned to its lawful owner. The investigation was later led by a member of the OPP Highway Safety Division in East Region, with assistance from the Leeds County detachment.

As a result of the investigation, Dylan Driscoll, 30, of Maitland, and John Campbell’s Towing have each been charged with:

  • Theft over $5,000
  • Fraud over $5,000

John Campbell’s Towing also faces charges under the Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act of:

  • Failing to ensure workers comply with the act
  • Failing to permit reasonable access

Charges have not been proven in court.

Driscoll and John Campbell’s Towing are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on Oct. 9.
