The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands recognized the contributions of the volunteers who help shape municipal decision-making on July 15 during its Volunteer Recognition Gala.

Held under the theme “Volunteers Grow Our Community,” the event brought together council members, township staff and volunteers to celebrate residents who have served on township committees, boards and working groups over the past four years.

Among those recognized were volunteers from the committee of adjustment, municipal heritage committee, Leeds and the Thousand Islands Public Library board, and the Partnership for Economic Enhancement and Revitalization.

The evening began with a traditional town crier proclamation delivered by Coun. Brian Mabee, who is the Town of Gananoque’s Town Crier, celebrating the history of volunteerism and its impact on communities.

The presentation also highlighted the economic and social value volunteers contribute while emphasizing the personal benefits of volunteering, including building connections, developing new skills and fostering a stronger sense of belonging.

Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke thanked volunteers for the time, experience and passion they contribute to the township, while recognizing several individuals for their many years of service.

“Our township is fortunate to have residents who are willing to share their time, passion, and expertise in service to others,” Smith-Gatcke said. “Your commitment helps council make informed decisions and strengthens our community. We sincerely thank each of you.”

As a symbol of appreciation, councillors presented each volunteer with a red maple tree to plant. Township officials said the trees represent the lasting impact volunteers have on the community, with roots that strengthen the township today and branches that will continue to grow for future generations.

The township extended its thanks to all residents who volunteer on municipal committees, boards and working groups, noting their continued dedication helps build a vibrant, connected and welcoming community.
