The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after Brockville police discharged a firearm while executing a search warrant at a residence in the city last night, resulting in a fatality.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents across the province where there has been a death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm at a person or allegations of sexual assault involving municipal, regional or provincial police officers.
According to a release issued by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region on Friday, August 7, 2026, members of the OPP East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit were assisting the Brockville Police Service with a search warrant at about 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6.
The release details that an interaction occurred during the operation, and police discharged their firearm. A 28-year-old man was taken to hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.
On Thursday evening, the Brockville Police Service put out a social media advisory asking the public to avoid the area of King Street West and Broad Street due to a large police presence, explaining investigators required space to perform their duties. Police also stated that there was no active threat to public safety and that more information would be released at a future date.
Because the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP said it will not be providing any further information at this time.
The identity of the deceased has not been released officially, and no additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have been made public at this time.
Update: Friday, August 7, 2026 (4:00pm)
In their own statement issued on Aug.7, 2026, the SIU confirmed that four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case and the post-mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Kingston.
