The City of Brockville is preparing to put together a dedicated organizing committee as it gets ready to host the 2027 Ontario 55+ Summer Games.

A motion and staff report going before Brockville’s General Committee on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, recommends establishing an Ad Hoc Games Organizing Committee to develop and implement a strategy for the three-day event, which is expected to bring approximately 1,200 people to the city next August.

According to the staff report, the large-scale event will feature more than 15 different sports at more than 20 venues throughout the area. Under the provincial transfer payment agreement, the City is required to establish a Games Organizing Committee made up of municipal representatives and community volunteers to organize, manage, promote and conduct the Games.

Staff say that while the city is prepared to support the Games, there is not enough internal capacity to lead the entire event without a dedicated organizing structure in place. Through a Ministry of Sport grant, a Summer Games Coordinator will be hired on a contract basis to be a member of and supervise the Games Organizing Committee.

The purpose of the proposed committee would be to provide strategic direction, identify risks and priorities, build relationships with local sports groups, businesses and community organizations, and help coordinate municipal departments, sponsors and other stakeholders.

According to City officials, one of the committee’s main goals would be to establish a $50,000 Capital/Legacy Fund aimed at creating lasting community benefits from the Games, while also monitoring the Games’ budget, resources, and fundraising efforts.

The proposed committee would have 15 members, including a Host Community Representative, Games Organizing Chair, Summer Games Coordinator, Games Ontario Representative and 11 public representatives covering areas such as finance, food services, accommodations, marketing, transportation, volunteers, accessibility and more.

The committee is recommended to approve the committee’s draft terms of reference and adopt the necessary bylaw.
