Kingston vehicle theft leads to arrest by Grenville OPP on Hwy. 401

Cooperative efforts between different police services resulted in the arrest of a man who stole a vehicle in Kingston and fled from officers who attempted to stop him.
According to the Grenville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), their detachment was contacted at about 12 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, and advised of a utility van that had been stolen from within the City of Kingston. The detachment then received a traffic complaint “a short while later” pertaining to the utility van, which was travelling eastbound on Highway 401, police said.
“Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop and fled the area,” Grenville OPP said in a press release issued on Monday, Aug. 10, 2026.
Later the same day, at approximately 1 p.m. – just an hour after receiving the initial call about the stolen vehicle – officers with the Grenville OPP “intercepted the suspect vehicle and deployed a tire deflation device,” police said.
According to police, the vehicle came to “a safe stop” on Highway 401 in Augusta Township.
As a result of their investigation, the Grenville OPP said that 24-year-old Mustafa Alsanos of Bowmanville was arrested and charged for the following offences:
- Possession of property obtained by crime with a value over $5,000
- Flight from a peace officer
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Breach of recognizance
- Driving while under suspension
The OPP said that Alsanos was held in police custody to attend a bail hearing and subsequently released with a court date scheduled for early September in Brockville.
The Grenville OPP told Kingstonist that inquiries regarding the utility van that was stolen from Kingston should be directed to Kingston Police. After multiple inquiries regarding where and when the vehicle was stolen and whether it was returned to its rightful owner, Lindsey Hegadorn, Corporate Communications Officer for Kingston Police, indicated that the van was reported stolen the same day the arrest took place. The vehicle had been stolen from Kingston’s west end, Hegadorn said.
Kingston Police did not respond to questions regarding whether the vehicle was returned.
