The Grand Parade returns to Athens next month in support of seniors’ programming

Community members are invited to lace up their walking shoes and show their support for local seniors as The Grand Parade returns to Centennial Park in Athens next month.

The Grand Parade welcomes individuals, families, local businesses, community groups and organizations for a morning of walking, fundraising, and community pride.

Now in its third year, the family-friendly fundraising walk supports Senior Support Services-LLG and the programs that help older adults remain independent, connected, and supported in their own communities.

Sarah Dodgson, Community Relations for Senior Support Services-LLG, says the event has continued to grow year after year, both in terms of participation and funds raised. Organizers say there are hoping to build on that momentum in 2026.

Last year alone, Senior Support Services-LLG supported 4,840 seniors across Lanark, Leeds and Grenville through programs designed to help older adults age safely and comfortably at home.

Dodgson said the organization’s work is becoming increasingly important as many seniors are struggling with the rising cost of living.

“For many people, living on a fixed income means that increases in the cost of groceries, housing, transportation and everyday essentials can have a significant impact,” she told Brockvilleist. “The Grand Parade helps give us the flexibility to offer subsidies and additional support, helping ensure that seniors can continue accessing the programs and services they need, regardless of their financial institution.”

Beyond fundraising, Dodgson said the event is also an opportunity to remind older adults that they remain valued members of the community.

“Now more than ever, it’s important to show our seniors they are not alone, that their community is still here for them, ready to support them through the challenges they may face,” she shared.

Dodgson said the event carries a message that extends well beyond the dollars raised.

“Our seniors have spent their lives building the communities we know and love today,” she emphasized. “They raised families here, built businesses, volunteered their time, and helped create the strong communities we are fortunate to be part of. Now, it’s our turn to show them that those communities are still here for them.

The Grand Parade takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Centennial Park in Athens. Participants can register individually or as part of a team, collect pledges ahead of the event, and enjoy family-friendly activities, food and entertainment on walk day.
