Social media posts prompt Brockville police to address Wednesday altercation involving off-duty officer

Brockville police say they are investigating an altercation involving a group of youth and an off-duty police officer after information about the incident circulated on social media.
According to police, the incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the area of Stewart Boulevard, just north of Parkedale Avenue.
Police acknowledged the incident in a statement after it was shared on social media, but said the investigation remains ongoing and full details cannot yet be released.
Police also said information circulating online does not include all the facts surrounding the altercation.
Brockvilleist reached out to Inspector Darryl Boyd of the Brockville Police Service for more information about what happened and whether anyone was injured.
“We aren’t going to release anymore about the incident right now, as we are still dealing with those involved,” Boyd explained.
“Any injuries that were sustained are minor in nature and non-life-threatening.”
Boyd said police do not currently expect criminal charges to result from the investigation.
“If there is not a change to the investigation, and charges are not laid as I suspect will be the case, then we won’t be reporting anymore information as there will be nothing before the court,” he said.
Boyd also clarified that police issued the statement on Thursday, Sept. 10 because of attention the altercation had received online.
“The only reason we reported on this is because of the coverage on social media about this,” he said. “We wanted people to know that the police are aware of it.”
Police say they will continue working with those involved as the investigation continues.
At this point, criminal charges are not being pursued.
