Brockville residents may see groups of uniformed soldiers carrying service rifles along city roads Thursday evening as the Brockville Rifles conducts a training exercise.

The Canadian Army Reserve unit will hold training marches in Brockville on Thursday, Sept. 17, between 7:30 and 9 p.m., according to a notice from the 33 Canadian Brigade Group issued on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Groups of up to 20 soldiers will march along local roadsides in various formations while wearing Canadian Army uniforms and personal protective equipment. Soldiers will also be carrying service rifles, which officials say will remain unloaded at all times.

Drivers are being asked to slow down when passing the soldiers.

According to the Canadian Forces, the exercise is intended to help reservists maintain their fitness and stamina while carrying equipment and prepare them to operate in varying weather conditions.

Regular training also helps prepare reservists to respond to domestic operations such as floods and wildfires, as well as international missions.
