Moose freed from Merrickville locks after unusual rescue effort

A moose trapped in the Merrickville locks is safely back on solid ground after a multi-agency rescue effort Thursday morning.
According to the OPP, concerned residents reported the moose trapped at the top of the Merrickville locks on Sept. 24.

Members of the OPP SAVE Team and Grenville OPP responded alongside the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Parks Canada, Merrickville Fire Department and municipal bylaw services.

Responders developed a plan to gradually drain the lock system, lowering the water one step at a time to safely guide the moose out.
The effort was successful, with the animal eventually making its way out of the locks and back into its natural habitat.
Police also thanked Merrickville residents for their cooperation and support during the rescue.
“A great example of community members and partner agencies working together to protect Ontario’s wildlife,” the OPP said.
